Description
- Rickwood Caverns is a recognized member of the National
Caves Association, and offers more than a mile of living geology.
The caverns themselves were water-formed during the Mississippian
period. Rickwood Caverns still contains active "living
formations," as mineral-laden water droplets build colorful
structures and flowstones. At Rickwood Caverns, the secrets
of the earth actually unfold before your eyes!
Rickwood
Cave reveals that it was carved from an ocean bed - shell
fragments and fossils of marine life are clearly visible along
the cavern ceiling and walls. Many curiosities are featured
on guided tours of the "miracle mile" at Rickwood
Caverns State Park.
Recreation
- In addition to viewing the caverns, Rickwood Caverns State
Park offers camping, picnicking, swimming and hiking activities.
Climate
- The climate of Alabama's lowlands can be described as subtropical
with nearly 60 inches of rain each year. The highest amount
of rain reaches the region as afternoon thunderstorms in July,
August and September. Summers are extremely hot and humid
with temperatures frequently reaching above 100 degrees F.
Summer nights cool slightly and provide a good time to travel
through the region.
Winter
temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees with
the humidity level at its lowest in November and December.
Spring and fall are very pleasant times to visit the region.
Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming trees and flowers.
During the fall temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees F
with low humidity levels. Northern Alabama is generally cooler
than the south due to its higher elevations.
Location
- Rickwood Caverns State Park is located a few miles from
Warrior, in north central Alabama. This Park is 4 miles off
I-64 of exit 284 west, north of Birmingham and east of Jasper.
